The Process

The recruitment process for college is precisely that – a process. These guidelines are meant to help players and parents understand a timeline of activities that should be performed over the years of recruiting and refine them. It should be noted that parents should most certainly be involved in this process, but when communicating with colleges and universities, most contact should come from the player. Coaches want to see children who are independent, can maintain a conversation, and are able to lead; from the viewpoint of coaches, making the parent do much of the talking is usually viewed negatively. It is encouraged, with that in mind, that players begin the administrative process themselves.

The NCAA supports student-athlete well-being by promoting a fair recruiting environment that limits intrusions into the lives of student-athletes and their families.

Recruiting happens when a college employee or representative invites a high school student-athlete to play sports for their college. Recruiting can occur in many ways, such as face-to-face contact, phone calls or text messaging, through mailed or emailed material or through social media. Please see table.
