Youth Soccer Age Group Change – 2026–2027 Season
Elk Grove Soccer is committed to providing the best possible development environment for our players. As part of that commitment, we want to keep our families informed about an important upcoming change to youth soccer age group registration beginning with the 2026–2027 season.
Following extensive feedback from clubs, coaches, parents, and players nationwide, major governing organizations—including US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, AYSO, and MLS NEXT—have approved a transition from the current calendar-year age grouping system (January 1 – December 31) back to a seasonal, school-year-based system (August 1 – July 31).
This change is designed to better align soccer teams with school grade levels. As a result, more players will have the opportunity to play alongside their classmates, strengthening both social connections and team cohesion.
Additionally, this adjustment helps reduce the challenges faced by “trapped players”—those whose birthdates previously placed them outside their natural peer group during key transitions such as middle school or high school.
To remain eligible for participation in competitions and leagues governed by these organizations, Elk Grove Soccer will adopt this new age group structure.
The 2025–2026 season will continue under the current calendar-year system, providing families and players with a full year to prepare. Beginning in Fall 2026, the new August 1 – July 31 age group cutoff will be implemented across most competitive leagues.

Q: Is Elk Grove Soccer required to make this change?
A: Yes. All clubs, including Elk Grove Soccer, that participate in leagues sanctioned by these governing bodies must adopt the new age group classification system.
Q: Why is the change being made?
A: The primary reason for this change is to create consistency across major soccer organizations and to better align players with their school grade peers and academic calendar, supporting both social and emotional development.

For recreation teams that play outside of Elk Grove – New jerseys will be made available in time for Fall 2026
- For competitive – teams are due to purchase new uniforms for the 2026-2027 season per the adidas uniform cycle
The club will aim to minimize additional costs for families
